Hurricanes Edge Tigers 3-2

riddle-goalThe Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a three-in-three weekend on Friday night as they welcomed the Medicine Hat Tigers at the ENMAX Centre and the ‘Canes continued to roll as they earned their third straight victory picking up a 3-2 win.

The Hurricanes had a better second period as they outshot the Tigers 10-6 in the middle frame. The ‘Canes tied the game at the 10:22 mark as Jordy Bellerive scored his 11th of the season on a persistent play to poke the puck out of Tigers’ Nick Schneider’s legs before tucking home the puck – Shaun Dosanjh and Ryley Lindgren picked up the assists on the goal to even the score at 1-1. Just 1:17 later, the Hurricanes jumped out to their first lead as 19-year-old defenseman Brennan Riddle leaned into a slap shot that deflected off a Tiger and passed Schneider for his first WHL goal in career game 138 – it was an unassisted goal at the 11:39 mark. The Hurricanes held the lead 2-1 after forty minutes of play.

The Tigers came out firing in the third period outshooting the ‘Canes 16-5 in the final twenty minutes of play. Medicine Hat tied the game at the 10:13 mark as Quenneville potted his second of the night, again on the power play, to tie the game at 2-2. The Hurricanes didn’t take too long to respond however as Giorgio Estephan leaned into a slapshot from the right circle with 3:04 left to give the ‘Canes a 3-2 lead – Tyler Wong and Colton Kroeker earned the assists on what proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Hurricanes were outshot 39-23 on the night. ‘Canes went 0/4 on the power play while the Tigers were 2/4.

Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #3 Brennan Riddle – First Career Goal
2) Tigers – #19 David Quenneville – 2 goals
3) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 37 saves

The Hurricanes improved to 16-11-2-2 on the season and 9-0-1-0 in their last ten games with the victory.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday when they travel to take on the Swift Current Broncos at 6:00pm Alberta Time. The ‘Canes will wrap up their three-in-three weekend on Sunday at 6:00pm when they welcome the Kelowna Rockets at the ENMAX Centre.

  1. Wow! 6 points earned in 3 consecutive nights! Fantastic Canes!

First, a great victory against the Tigers, in Regulation. Then two points in Swift via exciting OT victory with #33 in net. Then, for an encore, to beat the visiting Rockets, despite the less than exemplary “work” of the two referee impersonators, Spurgeon and Kowalski!

It is so frustrating to watch the home team play such disciplined hockey against a big, fast, & skilled team, only to have those two $&%ing fellatio-masters make it an unfair game by allowing the Rockets to get away with over a half dozen blatant stick and elbowing infractions. Had this game had been officiated using the usual and typical WHL “standards” for penalties, the Hurricanes should have played 14 minutes more of this game with a man-advantage. The lack of discipline and liberties taken by the Rockets cost them nothing, and there was no reward for the Hurricanes fair play.

With less than 7 minutes left in this game, Lind is careless with his stick & hits Estephan in the face, your hand goes up (good, nice to see you had a restful nap). You whistle the play dead (great, and you were even able to do that at the same time as you were holding your hand in the air). Lind then proceeds to knock Estephan down with a cross check to the head… Then, BOTH of you had your arms up, yet you still got it wrong. How does that happen? The second arm didn’t go up at the first offence, so that has GOT to be 2+2 = 4 minutes, you dumb $&#^s!! Did the Rockets show you a Buy-one-get-one-free coupon for high sticking minors? Nobody is asking you to get a man to the moon or even expecting you to grow a set and over rule any one of the linesman’s several botched icing calls! Just do your job and make the obvious calls that you signalled that you saw and were going to make! (You are so lucky that the only guys as unemployable as you two are your bosses at the WHL office)

Unbelievable discipline and control in this game displayed by the Lethbridge Hurricanes players & coaches! Congratulations!
