The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their three-in-three road trip on Saturday night in Everett against the Silvertips. The Hurricanes snapped a five game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the ‘Tips.
It was a much better start for the Hurricanes who were sluggish to start the game in Seattle on Friday night. The Hurricanes outshot the Silvertips 11-8 in the opening period. The ‘Canes started with a strong opening five minutes but couldn’t solve Carter Hart early. Both teams had chances in the opening period including a partial breakaway for the Silvertips Matt Fonteyne but Stuart Skinner made a great save to keep the game scoreless. The Hurricanes struck first late in the period as Ryan Vandervlis bust in on a two-on-one and ripped one over the blocker of Carter Hart to make it 1-0 Lethbridge with 42.8 seconds left in the opening period – Tyler Wong picked up the lone assist on the play.
It didn’t take long for Everett to tie the game in the second period as the ‘Tips made it a 1-1 game just 3:52 into the middle frame as Lucas Skrumeda jumped into the rush on a three-on-two and roofed it over Skinner after receiving a pass from Dominic Zwerger. Both teams had an opportunity on the power play in the period but couldn’t find the net as the game was tied 1-1 after forty minutes of play. Silvertips led the shot department in the middle period 11-10.
The Hurricanes continued to play a strong team game in the third period despite the Silvertips coming on strong and outshooting the ‘Canes 12-3 in the final twenty minutes. Everett had a great chance to take the lead as Patrick Bajkov had a great chance but couldn’t bury. On the ensuing turnover, Brennan Menell whipped the puck up ice to Wong who drove wide on the defenseman and snapped one by Hart, again blocker side, to make it 2-1 Lethbridge. The ‘Tips pulled Hart in hopes of generating a game-tying goal but they couldn’t do so as the ‘Canes went on to the win.
The ‘Canes were outshot 31-24 in the hockey game. Lethbridge went 0/2 on the power play while Everett went 0/1 with the extra man.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – 1 goal, 1 assist
2) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 30 saves
3) ‘Tips – #24 Lucas Skrumeda – 1 goal
The Hurricanes improve their road record to 3-6-0-2 on the year and their overall record to 8-11-1-2 on the season. The ‘Canes will wrap up their three-in-three road trip in Portland against the Winterhawks Sunday at 6:00pm Mountain Time.
