Hurricanes Fall 7-3 to Giants

wong-giantsThe Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a three game BC Division road trip on Saturday night by dropping a 7-3 decision to the Vancouver Giants at the Langley Events Centre.

Former Hurricanes’ defenseman Darian Skeoch had a goal and one assist in the game and was one of seven Giants to register two or more points in the game. Ryan Gilchrist made his third start falling to 0-1-1-1 on the season allowing seven goals on 32 shots.

The Hurricanes started the game strong trading chances early on with the Giants. Late in the first period, the ‘Canes struck first opening the scoring at the 14:06 mark as Giorgio Estephan scored for the fourth time in five games – Egor Babenko and Igor Merezhko earned the assists. It didn’t take long however for the Giants to respond as Dmitry Ospiov let a shot go wide that bounced off the end boards to Jack Flaman who put the puck into the empty net to tie the game 1-1 after twenty minutes of play. ‘Canes held the edge in shots 8-7 in the opening period.

The Giants started to take over the game in the second period. Tyler Benson scored his fourth goal in two games against the Hurricanes this season at the 6:32 mark to give Vancouver their first lead of the night on the power play. The ‘Canes responded with a power play goal of their own as Brayden Burke banked it off Osipov and passed Tendeck to make it 2-2. Just under four minutes later, Radovan Bondra scored his first of two goals in the game to put Vancouver up 3-2. Giants made it 4-2 with 1:01 left in the second as Ty Ronning jumped on a rebound with a delayed penalty in effect. Giants outshot the ‘Canes 17-5 in the middle frame.

The ‘Canes outshot the Giants 9-8 in the third period but Vancouver added three more goals in the period. Ronning netted his second of the night 3:45 into the third period to put the Giants up 5-2. They made it 6-2 as Bondra scored his second of the night just 1:28 later. The Hurricanes broke the four goal run by the Giants as former Giants Brennan Menell struck on the power play scoring his third in his return to Vancouver. Skeoch rounded out the scoring less than two minutes later as the Giants went on to the 7-3 victory sweeping the two game season series with the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes, who had outshot their opposition in four straight games, were outshot by the Giants 32-22. The Hurricanes went 2/6 on the power play while the Giants went 2/3 with the extra man.

The Hurricanes finished the three game trip with a 1-1-0-1 earning three of a possible six points on the trip. The ‘Canes are now off for a week before they host the Saskatoon Blades in the first of four meetings on Sunday, November 13th on Military Appreciation Night.
