The Western Hockey League, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League and Hockey Canada, announced the roster for Team WHL for the upcoming 2016 CIBC Canada Russia Series and Lethbridge Hurricanes forward Giorgio Estephan has been named as one of 12 forwards.
Estephan, 19, is in his fourth season with the Hurricanes. He was originally selected by the Hurricanes fourth overall in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. The product of Edmonton, Alberta has tallied nine points (3g-6a) in eight games since returning from an extended stay at Buffalo Sabres training camp. Estephan, who was selected in the sixth round (152nd overall) by the Sabres in the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft, racked up a career year in 2015-2016 collecting career highs in points (74), goals (30) and assists (44) while appearing in 59 games.
“It’s a pretty cool thing, I’m really excited about it and I’m really honoured and hopefully I can show good,” said Estephan. “I was really shocked and I’m pretty proud. Getting to play in this in front of my friends and family [in Edmonton] is pretty cool to me and I’ll hold this close to me.”
Estephan becomes the first Hurricanes player since Carter Ashton in 2009 to take part in the event for Team WHL.
Team WHL will face Team Russia in Game 1 of the 2016 CIBC Canada Russia Series in Prince George, BC on Monday, November 7th before shifting to Edmonton, Alberta on Tuesday, November 8th. The Ontario Hockey League will host Game 3 and 4 before the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will host the remainder of the six game series.
The event is an integral part of the identification process for Team Canada in advance of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships that are scheduled to take place in Montreal and Toronto beginning on December 26th.
The Hurricanes completed a three-game East Division road trip on Friday night when they visit the Brandon Wheat Kings at 6:30pm MT.
