The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a three-game road trip on Tuesday night in Regina against the Pats and for the ninth time in 11 meetings dating back to last year the Pats defeated the Hurricanes by a 6-1 score.
The Pats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and never looked back en route to the win. Filip Ahl and Sam Steel each scored twice in the game while Giorgio Estephan tallied the only ‘Canes goal in the loss.
It took all of 6:41 before the Pats jumped out to a 1-0 lead as the WHL-leading scorer Sam Steel netted his eighth of the season as his pass deflected by Stuart Skinner. The Pats struck again at the 11:39 mark as Ahl scored his first of two in the period to make it 2-0. At the 16:55 mark, Rykr Cole scored his first of the season slipping one through the legs of Skinner making it 3-0. Just 57 seconds later, Regina struck again as Ahl jammed home his second of the night to give the Pats a healthy 4-0 lead. Late in the period the Hurricanes got on the board as Estephan roofed one over the blocker of Tyler Brown to make it 4-1 Pats after twenty minutes of play. Regina held the shot advantage 14-9 in the first period.
The Hurricanes had some opportunity in the second period to get back into the game as they had the only three power plays in the period but were unable to generate many good looks. The ‘Canes were better defensively in front of Ryan Gilchrist who replaced Stuart Skinner to start the second period. Gilchrist made some great saves in the period as he stopped 13 of 14 shots he faced. The Pats struck late with just 46 seconds left in the period as Nick Henry scored on a back door feed from Ahl to make it 5-1 Pats after two periods. Hurricanes had six shots in the period, Regina had 14.
The third period was relatively even from both sides. The Hurricanes played a sounder period despite being outshot 10-8 in the final twenty minutes. The only lapse in judgement came while on a power play as a pass was picked off by Pats overager Dawson Leedahl who moved in shorthanded before dropping a pass to Steel who moved in and put a backhand shot that pinballed off Gilchrist and into the net making it a 6-1 game and that would be the final.
The ‘Canes were outshot for the sixth straight game as Regina held the edge 38-23 in the game. The Hurricanes went 0/8 on the power play while the Pats were 0/4.
Three stars of the game were:
1) Pats – #61 Filip Ahl – 2 goals, 1 assist
2) Pats – #23 Sam Steel – 2 goals
3) Pats – #31 Tyler Brown – 22 saves
The Hurricanes fall to 5-4-1-1 on the season and 1-2-0-1 on the road. The ‘Canes continue their three-game East Division road trip on Wednesday when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7:00pm
