The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued a three-game home stand on Friday night as they welcomed Darian Skeoch and the Vancouver Giants as the ‘Canes looked for another home victory but it was the Giants that got the last laugh with a 4-3 overtime win at the ENMAX Centre.
Brayden Burke, who had three points on Wednesday night against the Victoria Royals, continued his red hot tear since returning from Calgary Flames training camp as he picked up another multiple point game with three points (1g-2a) albeit in the losing cause. The Giants Captain, Tyler Benson, led the way for Vancouver with a hat-trick in the game.
The Hurricanes, for the seventh straight outing, scored the first goal of the game as Jesse Zaharichuk tipped home a back door feed by Giorgio Estephan to make it 1-0 ‘Canes 11:42 into the period – Burke picked up the second assist on the play. The Giants equalized less than two minutes later as they took advantage of a defensive breakdown by the Hurricanes before Thomas Foster set up Tyler Benson for his third of the year to make it 1-1. The ‘Canes retook the lead 3:10 later as Ryley Lindgren re-directed his sixth of the year to make it 2-1 Lethbridge – Burke and Brennan Menell picked up the helpers. Giants held the edge in shots 10-9 in the first period.
The Giants came out with a strong opening shift of the second period and capitalized on it. Benson netted his second of the game and fourth of the year just 58 seconds into the period to tie the game 2-2 – Foster and Skeoch picked up the assists on Benson’s second of the night. The Hurricanes had an extended power play as former ‘Cane Johnny Wesley was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for checking to the head but the ‘Canes mustered just two shots with the five-minute power play. The ‘Canes did claw back out in front as Burke scored his second of the year on a beautiful solo rush at the 14:01 mark to make it 3-2 Lethbridge. The ‘Canes outshot the Giants 13-8 in the second period.
In the third period, the Giants once again came back to tie the game as Brendan Semchuk hooked one a power play goal at the 7:29 mark to even the score at 3-3. It was the third time in the game that the Giants clawed back to tie the game. Late in the period, Burke was issued a two-minute boarding penalty with 1:07 left in regulation resulting in a Vancouver power play. The Giants didn’t score in regulation, however just 39 seconds into the overtime period Benson completed the hat-trick to give Vancouver a 4-3 overtime victory.
Giants outshot the Hurricanes 12-6 in the third period and scored on the lone shot in overtime. Vancouver held the edge in shots 31-28 in the game.
