Hurricanes Deal Folk to Royals

folk2The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Monday that the team has traded overage forward Carter Folk to the Victoria Royals in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in the 2017 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Folk, 20, was originally acquired by the Hurricanes in trade with Riley Sheen in October of 2013 from the Seattle Thunderbirds. In parts of three seasons with the Hurricanes, Folk appeared in 171 games collecting 61 points (26g-35a) along with 296 penalty minutes. The Regina, Saskatchewan product added one goal in three post-season games last year.

“It’s a hard, hard day today. The thing about Carter is he came here in a trade from Seattle for some players that didn’t want to play here and he was a big reason for the turn around here,” said Hurricanes General Manager, Peter Anholt. “We’re sending Carter to a real good organization, so that’s makes it a little bit easier.”

Folk set career highs during the 2015-2016 season dressing in 66 games while registering 31 points (10g-21a) along with 77 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating. The forward was an Assistant Captain on the team for the past two campaigns.

“In the dressing room, I don’t think you’re going to find a nicer kid. Any time you’re moving a quality person like Carter, it’s hard, but you take solace in the fact of where he’s going,” Anholt added. “He’ll be missed. His presence on the ice and how he plays the game with that reckless abandonment and the sandpaper he brings to the game was very important for our hockey club.”

The Hurricanes are now down to the WHL maximum of three overage players as Tyler Wong, Ryley Lindgren and Kord Pankewicz are the three remaining 1996-born players.

The Hurricanes will open the 2016-2017 regular season on Friday, September 23rd when they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers at to the ENMAX Centre for the Dairy Queen Home Opener. Individual game tickets are now on sale by visiting the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre or by calling 403-329-SEAT (7328).
