Hurricanes Snap Skid; Beat Oil Kings 8-4

Lethbridge Hurricanes (41-20-1-1)     vs.     Edmonton Oil Kings (27-29-6-1)

The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a three game home stand Saturday night as they welcomed the Edmonton Oil Kings and the ‘Canes snapped a five game losing streak with a convincing 8-4 victory.

Local product, Drayton Thunder Chief, made his WHL debut for the Hurricanes and picked up an assist in the game. Tyler Wong and Ryley Lindgren led the way offensively for the ‘Canes as they each had three points while Jordy Bellerive scored a pair of goals. In total, seven Hurricanes had multiple point nights.

Edmonton jumped out to a lead as Dysin Mayo buried one passed Stuart Skinner just 4:17 into the game off a funny bounce that came right to him giving the Oil Kings an early 1-0 lead; it was the fifth straight game the Hurricanes have surrendered the opening goal. Just under four minutes later, the Hurricanes equalized as Cory Millette finished off a beautiful rush for his 27th goal of the season at the 8:13 mark. Just 37 seconds later, Wong tapped home his team-leading 37th of the season to give the ‘Canes a 2-1 lead. The Hurricanes made it 3-1 as Lindgren potted his 25th before Bellerive banged home his sixth of the season as the ‘Canes held the lead 4-1 after twenty minutes of play.  Hurricanes were outshot 11-10 in the opening period.

Midway through the second period, Bellerive was penalized for four minutes with a high-sticking double-minor and the Oil Kings struck as Brandon Baddock slipped home his 21st of the season cutting the lead to 4-2. Hurricanes scored a pair of power play goals of their own as Brayden Burke had one bounce home for his 23rd of the season before Andrew Nielsen buried his 16th of the season as the Hurricanes led 6-2 after forty minutes of play. Shots were tied 12-12 in the middle frame.

The ‘Canes clamped it down pretty well in the third period before the teams traded a four goals with under seven minutes left. Bellerive scored his second of the night, and seventh of the season, on the power play at the 13:01 mark – Thunder Chief picked up the assist on the goal. Colton Kehler picked up another power play goal for Edmonton before Brady Reagan and Brett Pollock exchange goals in the final five minutes as the ‘Canes went on to the 8-4 win.

The Hurricanes were outshot 12-7 in the final twenty minutes and 35-29 overall. ‘Canes went 2/8 on the power play while the Oil Kings struck twice on four opportunities.

The win for the Hurricanes snapped a five game losing streak and a four game home losing streak. The ‘Canes finished the month of February with a 5-6-1-1 record. The win improves the ‘Canes record to 41-20-1-1 on the season and move into a tie with the Brandon Wheat Kings for first overall in the in the Eastern Conference – Hurricanes get the tiebreaker with more victories.

The ‘Canes now embark on a four game road trip the begins on Wednesday, March 2nd in Moose Jaw against the Warriors.
