The Break Down

The Lethbridge Hurricanes kick off 2016 the same way they ended 2015 and that is by facing the Calgary Hitmen tonight. The ‘Canes welcome the Hitmen in the second of a home-and-home at the ENMAX Centre tonight at 7:00pm.

The ‘Canes and Hitmen faced off at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday night. The Hitmen picked up a 6-4 loss. Giorgio Estephan scored his 18th and 19th goals of the season in the losing cause. Jordy Bellerive snapped a 25-game goalless drought while Brayden Burke also scored.

Jakob Stukel scored twice including the winner. Three of Calgary’s six games came on the power play, including both of Stukel’s goals. The Hurricanes led the game 4-3 heading into the third period, but three goals in the final twenty minutes helped the Hitmen to the win. Calgary went 3/9 on the power play while Lethbridge went 1/4.

Tonight will be the third of six meetings between the Hurricanes and Hitmen. The home team has won both games by a 6-4 score.

What To Watch

Lethbridge Point of View

2015 Success: In 73 games during the calendar year of 2015, the Hurricanes have posted an overall record of 37-33-2-1 accumulating a total of 77 points. The ‘Canes were 20-14-1-1 on home ice and 15-19-1-0 away from home during 2015. The Hurricanes are 26-12-0-0 in the 2015-2016 season.

Home Cookin’: The Hurricanes kick off a span of game at home after playing nine games in nine different cities. The ‘Canes will play eight of their next ten games at the ENMAX Centre starting tonight against the Calgary Hitmen. The Hurricanes are 14-3-0-0 on home ice this season.

Calgary Point of View

Big Guys Missing: The Hitmen are without their leading scorer Radel Fazleev and their top defenseman in Travis Sanheim. Both are attending the World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland. Sanheim is playing with Team Canada while Fazleev is representing Team Russia. Both are Philadelphia Flyer draft picks.

Stukel Sniping: The Hitmen made a big trade with the Vancouver Giants back in October when they acquired forwards Jackson Houck, Jakub Stukel and goaltender Cody Porter. Since joining the Hitmen, Stukel has racked up 21 goals in 26 games. In 67 games in his career with the Giants before, he only had scored nine goals.
