Lethbridge Hurricanes (15-9-0-0) vs. Kootenay Ice (6-18-2-0)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their home ice dominance at the ENMAX Centre as they rolled over the Kootenay Ice 9-0 Thursday night as nine different goal scorers lit the lamp.
All but two players, Ryley Lindgren and Ryan Vandervlis, registered at least a single point in the victory. Six different Hurricanes had multi-point games (Arvin Atwal, Tyler Wong, Giorgio Estephan, Brett Davis, Brayden Burke and Egor Babenko). Stuart Skinner earned his second career shutout one year to the day of his first.
The game started slowly for the Hurricanes as Kootenay had a strong start to the game. The Ice outshot the Hurricanes 4-0 early in the game and held the ‘Canes without a shot for the first ten minutes of the game. However, on a rush up the ice, Davis set up Barrett Sheen who scored his first ever WHL goal to make it 1-0 – Atwal picked up the second assist – as the ‘Canes led 1-0 after twenty minutes. The Hurricanes outshot the Ice 9-6 in the opening period.
The ‘Canes exploded in the second for four goals. Burke scored his sixth of the season to make it 2-0 just 2:35 into the second period. Just under four minutes later, Estephan snapped a three game goalless drought making it 3-0. Justin Gutierrez added his sixth before Wong scored his 17th of the season at the 15:17 mark on a power play to make it 5-0 after two periods of play.
Lethbridge added four more in the third period as Cory Millette continued his hot hand potting his 11th of the season on a shorthanded breakaway 4:50 into the third period. Atwal picked up his fifth before Carter Folk added his third on a power play. Davis rounded out the scoring with his third in as many games with another power play goal as they went on to the 9-0 win.
The Hurricanes outshot the Ice 17-0 in the third period and 48-18 in the game. The ‘Canes went 3/5 on the power play while were 4/4 on the penalty kill.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #19 Brayden Burke – (1 goal, 3 assists)
2) ‘Canes – #9 Giorgio Estephan – (1 goal, 2 assists)
3) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – (1 goal, 2 assists)
The Hurricanes improved to 10-2-0-0 on home ice, the most home victories in the WHL, as they matched the entire home ice win total from 2014-2015. The ‘Canes improve to 15-9-0-0 on the season.
