Lethbridge Hurricanes (13-8-0-0) vs. Everett Silvertips (11-6-0-1)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a five-game home stand in style as they snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Everett Silvertips in their lone meeting of the season on Wednesday at the ENMAX Centre..
The Hurricanes trailed the game 1-0 after one period, but a strong second period helped pace the ‘Canes to the win. Egor Babenko and Cory Millette each scored two goals in the victory while Jayden Sittler made 31 saves.
It was an even first period with a high-pace of play from end to end. The Hurricanes tested Silvertips goalie Mario Petit, who got the start in place of Carter Hart, early in the game and despite Petit looking shaky, the ‘Canes failed to capitalize. Instead, at the 10:31 mark of the first period the ‘Tips jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Devon Skoleski beat Sittler on a two-on-one as Everett led the game 1-0 through twenty minutes of play. Shots were even at 13 apiece in the opening period.
The Hurricanes tied the game early in the second period as Millette poked home a loose puck after Petit stopped Carter Folk on a shot; for Millette it was his eighth of the season to tie the game 1-1 – assists went to Folk and Ryley Lindgren. Just over six minutes later Babenko scored his first of two in the period as he added his 10th of the year to give Lethbridge a 2-1 lead. Yan Khomenko tied the game at two before Babenko on a two-on-two rush restored the ‘Canes 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Early in the third period with Lindgren in the box, Millette finished off a three-way passing play as Justin Gutierrez found Kord Pankewicz who centered to Millette who had an open net to make it 4-2 with the ‘Canes fourth shorthanded goal of the season. Noah Juulsen made things interesting as he beat Sittler with a bullet from the blue line with 4:01 left in regulation, but the Hurricanes held off the Everett push skating to a 4-3 victory.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #22 Egor Babenko – (2 goals)
2) ‘Canes – #10 Cory Millette – (2 goals, including the game winner)
3) ‘Tips – #8 Patrik Bajkov – (1 assist)
