Lethbridge Hurricanes (12-8-0-0) vs. Regina Pats (9-8-1-0)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a three game, three day road trip on Sunday afternoon as they faced the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre in hopes of snapping a five-game road losing streak, but it was not to be as the Pats took a 5-3 victory handing the ‘Canes their third straight defeat.
The Hurricanes once again had third period leads that escaped them. The ‘Canes led 2-1 and 3-2 only to see the Pats rally back to tie the game twice en route to the win. Regina scored the game winning goal with just 1:26 left in the game.
It was another good start for the Hurricanes who found themselves in a 1-1 tie after twenty minutes. The ‘Canes created offense from the beginning of the night, but a tough break just 1:06 into the hockey game as the Pats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Jake Leschyshyn scored his first of the season on a redirect. Despite the early goal against, the ‘Canes continued to push the pace but Tyler Brown stood tall early including a save on a Carter Folk breakaway. The Hurricanes solved Brown as Tyler Wong banged in a rebound for his 16th goal while on a power play to tie the game 1-1 at the 10:04 mark – assists went to Andrew Nielsen and Brayden Burke. Just over four minutes later the ‘Canes thought they had taken a lead, but a goal by Cory Millette was disallowed as Egor Babenko had knocked the puck down with a high-stick on the play leading up to the goal despite the referee allowing play to continue and signalling a goal on the ice.
The Hurricanes play yet another strong second period. Regina had the edge in shots 12-10 but it was the Hurricanes the scored the only goal. Just 5:17 into the second period a turnover by the Pats in the offensive zone saw the Hurricanes counter and on a beautiful three-way passing play the ‘Canes took the lead as Giorgio Estephan finished it off with his eighth of the year – Burke and Babenko picked up the helpers and for the second time on the trip the Hurricanes entered the third period with a lead.
However, similar to the previous two games on the trip, the third period proved to be the Achilles heel of the Hurricanes as they allowed four goals in the final twenty minutes. Luc Smith tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:29 mark off a deflection that beat Skinner through the legs. The ‘Canes restored their lead when Arvin Atwal squeezed a slap shot through Brown’s legs to make it 3-2 however just 49 seconds later Colby Williams tied the game with a shot high to the glove of Skinner making it 3-all. Both teams had multiple chances to jump out in front and the Pats did just that as Adam Berg beat Skinner with a shot low to the glove with just 1:26 left before Austin Wagner potted an empty net goal to secure the 5-3 win.
The Hurricanes were outshot 39-36 in the game. Lethbridge went 1/2 on the power play and were 2/2 on the penalty kill.
Three stars of the game were:
1) Pats – #26 Jake Leschyshyn – (1 goal)
2) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – (1 goal)
3) Pats – #15 Sean Richards – (2 assists)
The Hurricanes return home to kick off a five game home stand on Wednesday when they host the Everett Silvertips at the ENMAX Centre in hopes of snapping their three game losing streak.
