Lethbridge Hurricanes (9-2-0-0)     vs.     Victoria Royals (8-5-0-1)

The Lethbridge Hurricanes won yet another game as they picked up a 4-3 shootout victory over the Victoria Royals for their seventh straight win to improve to 9-2-0-0 to start the new campaign.

The Hurricanes led the game three separate times only to see the Royals battle back and tie the game each time. Tyler Wong scored his 13th goal of the season in regulation and added the game-winning goal in the shootout.

The Hurricanes improved to 8-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal of the season as they opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the game as Brayden Burke was the beneficiary of a whacky bounce that came right in front and Burke beat Royals netminder Coleman Vollrath for his fourth of the year – assists went to Arvin Atwal and Giorgio Estephan. The Royals tied the game as Dante Hannoun scored his first of two in the game at the 7:48 mark to make it 1-1. The ‘Canes took the lead again when Wong buried a crease scramble to make it 2-1, however, it was short-lived as the Royals once again tied it just 50 seconds later to make it 2-2 heading to the first intermission as Vladimir Bobylev beat Jayden Sittler with a tap-in at the side of the net.

The teams traded goals in the second period; first the ‘Canes jumped out to the third lead of the night when Ryley Lindgren scored his sixth goal of the season at the 13:21 mark on a power play – assists went to Estephan and Burke. The goal came after a period that was relatively uneventful except for a fight between Atwal and Ale Forsberg. Before the second period was done, Hannoun scored his second of the night to once again tie the game 3-3 heading to the third.

In the third, Stuart Skinner replaced Sittler and the soon-to-be 17-year-old was lights out not allowing a goal on 18 shots through the third period and overtime despite some great scoring chances for Victoria. The Hurricanes had their chances to take the lead in the third, and overtime, but Vollrath was solid as the game went to a shootout.

In the shootout, after a Egor Babenko goal, Matthew Phillips failed to get Victoria on the board and Wong moved in and ended the game with a deke to the back-hand before sliding the puck five-hole for the winner.

The Hurricanes were outshot in the game 36-26 in the game. Lethbridge went 2/3 on the power play while were a perfect 3/3 on the penalty kill.

Three Stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #22 Egor Babenko – (shootout goal)
2) Royals – #19 Dante Hannoun – (2 goals)
2) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – (1 goal, shootout winner)

The Hurricanes improve to 9-2-0-0 on the season and 2-0-0-0 on their six-game road trip. The ‘Canes take on the Vancouver Giants Wednesday night on a game that can be seen on the WHL on SHAW or heard on ROCK 106 with the puck dropping at 8:00pm mountain time.
