Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-2-0-0) vs. Regina Pats (4-4-0-0)
It was a see-saw battle from start to finish but the Lethbridge Hurricanes held off the Regina Pats for a 6-4 victory Wednesday night at the ENMAX Centre to earn their third straight victory and to improve to 5-2-0-0 to start the season.
A third period hat-trick by the Captain Tyler Wong helped the Hurricanes to the victory. Wong was one of five players to have multiple point efforts in the win as Andrew Nielsen, Giorgio Estephan, Ryley Lindgren and Brayden Burke all had two points in the game.
The Hurricanes started off strong pushing the pace to the Pats outshooting them early 15-3 in the game as the ‘Canes got rewarded because of it. Ryley Lindgren opened the scoring with his first of two in the game as he buried one by Pats starter Tyler Brown at the 13:51 mark to make it 1-0 – assists went to Carter Folk and Burke. The ‘Canes added to their lead as Egor Babenko scored his fourth of the year at the 16:32 mark to give Lethbridge a 2-0 with twenty minutes gone.
The second period belonged to the Pats. Adam Brooks scored his first of three in the game on a cross-seam one-timer that Stuart Skinner got a piece of but not enough and it cut the lead to 2-1 with the power play goal. Connor Hobbs, who fed Brooks on the Pats first goal, got one of his own as he blasted one by Skinner with another power play marker to tie the game 2-2. Before the period was out, Brooks beat Skinner with a shot high-glove to give Regina their first lead of the night as they had a 3-2 lead at the second intermission.
However, the ‘Canes Captain took over from there. Wong scored his first goal of the night at the 4:55 mark on a tip in of a Pankewicz shot that tied the game early in the third 3-3. Wong had another redirect for his 10th of the year 8:49 into the third to give the ‘Canes a one goal edge, 4-3. But Brooks scored his hat-trick goal with a pin-point snipe to the top shelf to make it 4-4. Just under four minutes after Brooks tied the game, it was Wong again who had a puck slowly cross the line passed Brown to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 lead and Lindgren iced it with a power play empty net goal with 1:17 left to help the ‘Canes to their third straight win.
The Hurricanes outshot the Pats 43-32 on the night. Lethbridge went 1/6 on the power play while Regina went 2/5.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – (3 goals, including game-winner)
2) Pats – #77 Adam Brooks – (3 goals)
3) ‘Canes – #23 Justin Gutierrez – (1 assist)
The Hurricanes now sit with a record of 5-2-0-0 on the season and are off until Saturday when they travel to Swift Current to take on the Broncos at Credit Union I-Plex at 7:00pm
