Lethbridge Hurricanes (3-2-1-0) vs. Calgary Hitmen (6-0-0-0)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up the 2015 ENMAX Pre-Season on Friday night with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Calgary Hitmen in Crowsnest Pass to conclude the tune-up season with a 3-2-1-0 record.
Arvin Atwal led the way offensively for the Hurricanes potting his first goal of the pre-season while also adding a pair of assists while Brayden Burke also chipped in with three assists in the game. The Hurricanes, who lead the game 2-0 after the first, trailed by two heading into the third period but battled back to force overtime eventually losing the game.
It didn’t take long for the Hurricanes to jump out to a lead as Tyler Wong scored a power play goal just 1:40 into the game as Austin Fyten was in the box for elbowing – Wong’s goal came just seven seconds into the man advantage; Brayden Burke and Atwal picked up the assists on the opening tally. The ‘Canes added to their lead just under six minutes later as Hurricanes hopeful Darian Skeoch beat Hitmen goalie Kyle Dumba for his first goal of the pre-season giving the ‘Canes a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes of play despite being outshot 5-4 in the period.
In the second, the Hitmen exploded scoring four goals to give themselves a two-goal cushion after two periods. Aaron Hyman cut the Hurricanes lead to one just 1:31 into the second after scoring his first of the pre-season beating ‘Canes goalie Stuart Skinner. Layne Bensmiller tied the game with a power play goal at the 7:16 mark before the Hitmen took their first lead of the game just 54 seconds later. Another power play goal at the 11:02 mark by Taylor Sanheim gave Calgary the edge after forty.
Down a pair, the Hurricanes dominated the third period outshooting the Hitmen 16-3 and would eventually chip their way back into the game with a pair of power play goals. First, Atwal fired home his first of the pre-season and second point of the night passed Dumba to make it 4-3 just 8:33 into the third period – Burke and Jordy Bellerive picked up the assists on the Atwal goal. The Hurricanes continued to press and eventually tied the game with under two minutes left as Ryley Lindgren scored his second of the pre-season to tie the game 4-4.
In the three-on-three overtime, it took just 2:41 for the game to be decided as Lucas Cullen beat Skinner for the game winning goal helping the Hitmen to their sixth win of the pre-season.
Arvin Atwal, Brayden Burke and Jordy Bellerive we the three Hurricanes who had multiple point games, Burke and Atwal each with three while Bellerive had a pair of assists. Skinner allowed five goals on 21 shots in the game.
