The Lethbridge Hurricanes improved their record to 3-2-0-0 in the 2015 ENMAX Pre-Season with a 3-2 win over the Kootenay Ice on Thursday night in the Crowsnest Pass.

Kord Pankewicz lead all scorers in the game with a pair of assists while Egor Babenko continued to shine scoring his third goal in as many games in the pre-season. Jayden Sittler stood tall in the Hurricanes crease going the distance stopping 32 of 34 Kootenay shots.

The Ice jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:19 mark as former Red Deer Rebel Mario Grman struck on a power play beating Sittler as Darian Skeoch sat in the penalty box after taking a holding minor. Just over five minutes later, the two Hurricanes imports connected to tie the game as Igor Merezhko set up Babenko for his third to tie the game at 1-1 with just over four minutes left in the opening period as the teams skated to 1-1 tie after twenty minutes of play. Hurricanes outshot the Ice 17-12 in the opening period.

In the second, Pankewicz found his game. The veteran rearguard helped the ‘Canes to their first lead of the game picking up an assist on Jaeger White’s first goal of the pre-season at the 6:45 mark of the second period to put Lethbridge up by one, 2-1 – the other assist went to sixteen-year-old Zane Franklin. The Hurricanes extended their lead to 3-1 when Brett Davis struck on a power play at the 11:19 mark for his third of the exhibition season – Brady Reagan and Pankewicz earned the assists as the ‘Canes lead 3-1 after forty minutes.

Kootenay scored the only goal of the third period as Vince Loschiavo scored his second of the pre-season at the 6:38 mark while shorthanded. Kootenay played a strong third period but could not manufacture another goal despite outshooting the Hurricanes by an 11-4 count in the final frame, but the ‘Canes held on for the 3-2 victory.

Following regulation, the two teams participated in a “practice” three-on-three overtime period as what will be seen in regular season play as a replacement of the tradition four-on-four.

The Hurricanes will wrap up the 2015 ENMAX Pre-Season schedule on Friday night when they will face the Calgary Hitmen at 7:00pm, also in the Crowsnest Pass.

The ‘Canes will kick off the 2015-2016 regular season when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Dairy Queen Home Opener on Friday, September 25th at the ENMAX Centre. Individual game tickets are now available by calling (403) 329-SEAT.
