Canes-Ice-PreseasonThe Lethbridge Hurricanes continued the ENMAX Pre-Season on Tuesday night at the old Memorial Arena in Cranbrook with a 6-1 victory over the Kootenay Ice as the ‘Canes earned their first victory of the pre-season.

Once again the Hurricanes boasted a young roster albeit not quite as young as the lineup iced in the exhibition opener on Friday. Veterans Arvin Atwal, Ryley Lindgren, Brayden Burke, Kord Pankewicz, Brandon Kennedy and Brady Reagan all made their pre-season debuts.

The Hurricanes picked up where they left off on Friday night controlling the play from the drop of the puck putting an early three shots in the first 25 seconds of the game on Ice starter Keelan Williams. The ‘Canes struck first as Barrett Sheen tucked one by the netminder at the 5:16 mark after a centering pass by Jaeger White – the second assist went to Ben Duperreault. Just over two minutes later, Brandon Kennedy pinched in on the back door and similarly to Sheen’s goal tipped one home on a pass from Ryan Vandervlis – Egor Babenko earned the second assist to make it 2-0 Lethbridge just under eight minutes into the game. Not long after, Jon Martin snapped one by Jayden Sittler to cut the lead to one, however Ryley Lindgren restored the two-goal lead scoring his first of the pre-season with just 17 seconds left in the period to make it 3-1 ‘Canes after twenty minutes. Shots favoured the Hurricanes 19-8 in the opening period.

The ‘Canes continued to control the game in the second period outshooting the Ice by a whopping 18-4 in the middle frame. The Hurricanes found the back of the net at the 12:53 mark when Brett Davis poked home a loose puck passed Williams to make it 4-1 Lethbridge. The assists on the goal went to Kord Pankewicz and Zane Franklin. The line of Franklin, Davis and Lindgren were dangerous all period long as the ‘Canes held a three-goal advantage heading into the third period.

The Hurricanes added to their lead in the third period as Ben Duperreault scored arguably the goal of the night at the 5:24 mark as he burst down the right wing and unleashed a wicked backhand shot that beat Williams top shelf to make it 5-1 – assists when the Sheen and Igor Merezhko. Both teams had power play opportunities the rest of the way, but no-one would capitalize until the final minute when Brady Reagan one-timed one home to round out the scoring helping the Hurricanes to the 6-1 victory.

The Hurricanes outshot the Ice 50-21 on the night. ‘Canes went 1/7 on the power play and chalked up a perfect 6/6 on the penalty kill. Brandon Kegler stopped all ten shots he faced in the game after replacing Jayden Sittler at the half way point. Sittler allowed one goal on 11 shots.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a Friday showdown in Coaldale against the Swift Current Broncos at 7:00pm. Tickets are available at the Coaldale Food Market for just $10.00.
