Lethbridge Hurricanes (18-35-4-3) vs. Everett Silvertips (36-17-3-4)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a three game road trip through the US Division Sunday afternoon in Everett against the Silvertips and a big first period helped pace the ‘Tips to a 5-4 win.
It was the third game in as many day for the Hurricanes after a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday in Seattle and a 5-2 loss Saturday in Portland. It was also the third game in as many days for the Silvertips who fell in a shootout on Friday to Tri-City before being trounced 7-0 Saturday in Seattle.
Four goals in the first period, two on the power play, for the Silvertips saw them take a healthy lead. Just 14 seconds into the game, Nick Walters stumbled at the Everett blueline and Nikita Scherbak burst up ice before snapping one by Stuart Skinner to make it 1-0. Everett continued to buzz in the first and made it 2-0 at the 11:38 mark when Dawson Leedahl finished a three-way passing play – Kohl Bauml and Scherbak picked up the helpers. The Hurricanes down a man would take another penalty resulting in a five-on-three power play and the second best PP in the league went to work scoring twice just 23 seconds apart. First, Patrick Bajkov made it 3-0 before Bajkov set up Graham Millar to tucked one home. Seven seconds after the Millar power play goal, Jamal Watson would get one back as the Captain scored his team-leading 23rd of the year making it 4-1 after one period. Shots favoured the Silvertips 12-7 in the first period.
The Hurricanes would their chances with power plays in the second period and made good just as the Silvertips in the first period. The ‘Canes, with a five-on-three man advantage, struck as Giorgio Estephan uncorked a cannon from the blue line beating Austin Lotz up high on the glove side to make it 4-2. The Hurricanes clawed within one as Brayden Burke roofed one over the glove of Lotz to make it 4-3 – Johnny Wesley and Jamal Watson picked up the assists. Both teams continued to press. Everett thought they scored with just 26.8 seconds left but the it was quickly waived off. However, it did result in a penalty shot for Nikita Scherbak. He moved in but was stopped by Skinner with the blocker to keep it a one goal lead. ‘Tips out shot the ‘Canes 15-11 in the second period.
In the third period, the two teams would trade goals. Noah Juulsen made it a 5-3 lead on a blistering slap shot from the blue line at the 6:46 of the third period – Ivan Nikolishin and former Hurricane Remi Laurencelle would pick up the assists. The Hurricanes didn’t give up however, and Johnny Wesley picked up his fifth of the year as the ‘Canes cut the lead to 5-4, but that was as close as they’d come falling by one.
Hurricanes were out shot 12-5 in the third period and 39-23 overall. ‘Canes went 2/6 on the power play while the ‘Tips went 2/5.

The Hurricanes go 0-2-1-0 on the three game road trip, but played some no quit, never say die hockey. The ‘Canes return home for a Thursday contest against the Edmonton Oil Kings and #throwbackthursday at the ENMAX Centre.
