Lethbridge Hurricanes (13-31-3-3) vs. Edmonton Oil Kings (24-23-4-2)
The Lethbridge Hurricanes paid their final visit to Alberta’s capital to take on the Edmonton Oil Kings on Tuesday night. The Hurricanes, who split the first two games at Rexall Place, won their second at Rexall Place this year holding onto a 4-3 victory.
The Hurricanes once again saw a depleted line up as Nick Walters, Tyler Wong, Jaeger White, Brandon Kennedy all missed the game due to ailments, while Carter Amson served his final of a five game suspension. Affiliates Ryan Vandervlis and Zane Franklin suited up for the Hurricanes.
It was a fairly even first period. Edmonton had a lengthy five-on-three early in the game as Scott Allan and Florian Baltram both were in the box, but the Hurricanes did a terrific job to kill it off. Oil Kings had an early edge in the first ten minutes, but the ‘Canes countered in the last ten with a power play of their own to build on, however, the first period settled in a scoreless tie. ‘Canes were out shot 14-7 in the opening period.
In the second period, both teams broke through to get on the board. Just 51 seconds into the period, Carter Folk had a puck bounce to him right in front of the net and made no mistake opening the scoring 1-0 Lethbridge. Ryley Lindgren made it 2-0 at the 1:46 mark receiving a pass from Jamal Watson before snapping one home. Edmonton chipped away however, Edgars Kulda made it 2-1 on his first goal since late October before a power play goal by Brandon Baddock to tie the game. Edmonton out shot Lethbridge 25-6 in the second period.
The Hurricanes scored twice in the first six minutes of the third period. First, Ryan Vandervlis scored his first WHL goal at the 3:14 mark as another affiliate Zane Franklin centre one in front to Vandervlis who buried to give Lethbridge a 3-2 lead. ‘Canes added another at the 5:14 mark as Ryley Lindgren scored his second of the night and fourth of the year to make it 4-2. Edmonton cut the lead to one with 90 seconds left in the game as Brett Pollock scored a shorthanded goal but that was as close as they’d come as the ‘Canes skated to a 4-3 victory.
Edmonton out shot the Hurricanes 13-8 in the third period and 52-21 in the game. ‘Canes went 0/3 on the power play, while the Oil Kings went 1/4 on the man advantage.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – (49 saves)
2) ‘Canes – #16 Ryley Lindgren – (2 goals, including GWG)
3) Oil Kings – #23 Edgars Kulda – (1 goal)
The ‘Canes pick up their second win in Edmonton this season and take two out of three at Rexall Place this season. It was just their second road win within the Central Division (both coming in Edmonton).
The ‘Canes return home Friday to kick off a three-in-three weekend against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
