Rebels Get By ‘Canes

Lethbridge, AB – The dust has finally settled after a busy trade deadline for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. While Jayden Sittler, Mike Winther, Brady Reagan and Florian Baltram all made their debuts on the weekend, tonight marked the first game for Johnny Wesley and Scott Allan. Lethbridge was looking for their first win over the Rebels, but Red Deer scored 4 goals in the 3rd for the victory.

Tonight’s Starters: G – Jayden Sittler, D – Andrew Nielsen, Scott Allan, F – Tyler Wong, Brayden Burke, Giorgio Estephan.

Back and forth action to start the game and it took 7 minutes before the first whistle. Early on it was the Rebels outshooting Lethbridge 3-1 but the lead would go to the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes would go on their first powerplay at the 8 minute mark when Kayle Doetzel interfered with Carter Folk. The Canes didn’t take long to get take advantage of the powerplay as Tyler Wong (Brayden Burke, Kord Pankewicz) skated in from the right circle and fired a shot upstairs blocker side on Taz Burman just 12 seconds into the PP. It was the 15th goal of year for the Cochrane, AB product who’s now surpassed last year’s total with 32 points (15G, 17A). Red Deer looked to tie it up with about 5 minutes to go in the game but the shot goes off the bar and somehow stayed out. The Hurricanes took the 1-0 lead into intermission after being outshot 14-7 by the Rebels.

Just 1:14 into the second Red Deer ties it up when Hayden Fleury’s shot is deflected pastJayden Sittler by Conner Bleackley for a 1-1 game. Both teams would get their chances in the period, including a couple of glorious chances from Giorgio Estephan and CaptainJamal Watson but Burman stopped all 13 shots he faced and Sittler countered with 11 saves in the middle frame as the period ended 1-1.

The Canes started the third on a PP after a slashing penalty to Haydn Fleury to end the second. The Hurricanes unable to convert with the man advantage and as soon as the PP expired, Fleury jumped out of the penalty box and had a clear breakaway to the goal. Fleury put the shot upstairs and the Rebels took their first lead of the game 2-1 just 2:08 into the 3rd period. Four minutes later, Bleackley would add his second of the game to extend their lead to 3-1. The Hurricanes kept fighting back and at the 9 minute mark, Johnny Wesley (Giorgio Estephan, Kord Pankewicz) spinned and fired a shot from the slot that beat Burman making it a one goal game. The Rebels restored their two-goal lead with just over 7 minutes to go in the game when Evan Polei flipped a backhand shot past Sittler making it 4-2. The Hurricanes made it a one goal game once again when Carter Folk (Ryley Lindgren, Kord Pankewicz) flew down the wing and fired a shot past Burman making it 4-3 with just over 4 minutes to play. With Sittler on the bench, Wyatt Johnson scored an empty netter with 16 seconds to play giving the Rebels a 5-3 win over the Hurricanes.
