The Lethbridge Hurricanes, who made a trade acquiring Brady Reagan for Taylor Cooper today, have also claimed 17-year-old forward Florian Baltram off waivers after he was released by the Seattle Thunderbirds.
The 1997-born Baltram was placed on waivers by the Thunderbirds after news that Roberts Lipsbergs was returning to the Seattle club from the East Coast Hockey League’s Stockton Thunder. The addition of Lipsbergs required Seattle to make a move as they would have had three imports and you are only allowed to carry two.
After the Hurricanes released forward Nikita Milekhin last month, the room was there to add Baltram. In 35 games this season, the native of Vienna, Austria, has collected five points (1g-4a) along with 20 penalty minutes. Baltram was selected in the second round, 108th overall by the Thunderbirds in this past years CHL Import Draft.
In 42 games last year with the Lower Austria Stars U20 team, the 5’11, 165-pound forward collected 41 points (17g-24a) along with a plus-16 rating and 24 penalty minutes. That was an improvement over his 25 points (12g-13a) in 37 games the year before.
Baltram also just completed competing for Team Austria for the 2015 World Junior Championship Division 1 Group A tournament from December 14th to December 20th. The winner of the tournament, which was Belarus, will compete in next year’s World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland. In five games, Baltram scored one assist in the tournament in Asiago, Italy.
The addition of Baltram for the Hurricanes also sees the club reassign 19-year-old forward Dexter Bricker to the Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in order to create space for Baltram. In all 38 games this season with the Hurricanes, Bricker collected four points (3g-1a) along with a minus-19 rating and 44 penalty minutes. The Saskatoon product was as key on the penalty kill and was strong on the fourth line winning faceoffs.
