Lethbridge Hurricanes (7-20-3-2) vs. Moose Jaw Warriors (15-16-2-1)
A three point night from both Tyler Wong and Kord Pankewicz led the way for the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Tuesday night as they knocked off the Moose Jaw Warriors by a 6-4 score.
Two goals in the first, two in the second and two in the third paved the way to the ‘Canes first win in six games, and the firs victory for Peter Anholt after assuming duties last Wednesday. The win also snaps a seven game road losing streak.
The Hurricanes played a strong game with an up tempo pace and used their defense well on the rush. Tyler Wong opened the scoring at the 14:23 mark beating Justin Paulic to make it 1-0 ‘Canes. Just over two minutes later Wong scored his second of the period on a one-timer on a perfect pass from Jamal Watson – the assist for the Captain snapped a six game pointless drought for him. Hurricanes held the edge in shots 13-8 in the first.
Just 39 seconds into the second period, former Hurricanes Jaimen Yakubowski beat Stuart Skinner on a deke to the backhand to cut the lead in half. However, the ‘Canes added two more just three minutes apart. First Pankewicz scored to make it 3-1 before Kade Jensen tallied a power play goal to give Lethbridge a 4-1 lead. Before the period was out, Tanner Eberle scored to see the advantage 4-2 ‘Canes after two.
The Hurricanes entered the third with a 4-1-1-0 record when leading after forty minutes, and they improved to 5-1-1-0 but it wasn’t easy. Just 24 seconds into the third Taylor Cooper finished on a power play for the eventual game winning goal. Moose
Jaw scored two quick ones late in the period. Jayden Halbgewachs at 14:49 and then Brett Howden at 17:16 to make it 5-4. However, with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Carter Folk slid home his fifth of the season in the gaping net to make it a 6-4 win.
Hurricanes were out shot 18-7 in the third period and 33-31 overall.
Lethbridge went 2/9 on the power play while Moose Jaw went 0/3.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – (2 goals, 1 assist)
2) ‘Canes – #20 Kord Pankewicz – (1 goal, 2 assists)
3) Warriors – #18 Jaimen Yakubowski – (1 goal)
With the win, the Hurricanes are now 2-0-0-0 on Tuesday’s and 5-1-0-1 on midweek games. They complete the two game road trip Wednesday in Regina against the Pats.
